Visual Communication Design Department of Yeditepe University, Faculty of Communication, has been training communication designers who are able to develop strong communication strategies, transform kowledge into creative design products by using technological design tools since 2001.

Within the framework of the Visual Communication Design Department curriculum, students learn animation design, game design, interaction design and video production, as well as all other branches of visual communication design.

Theoretical courses for the creation, design and planning phase of an idea, practice-based courses for the visualization and design stages including workshops and project courses where students can realize their productions within the framework of a concept provide them with experience in the field. Projects are carried out individually and in groups within the scope of the course and activities conducted in the department and outside the classroom, with professionals in the field. Thus, students are prepared to produce their creative design projects and achieve the vision of visual communication design. Students gain competence in the field and determine their own field of expertise by taking part in the activities held in the department agency "Atelier Root", "Fall Meetings in Design", "Spring Meetings in Design" seminars and workshops organized every semester, the "End of Year Student Exhibition" formed under different thematic topics.

Visual communication design has an interdisciplinary structure that evaluates every environment as a mutual communication process and brings together the fields of communication, media, art and technology. This innovative field, offering solutions to the needs of the 21st century combines design and technology to communicate. Visual communication design uses audiovisual and interactive tools and media while focusing on creative ideas, users, services and products.

Visual communication designers develops their design skills and experience by using digital media such as graphics, video, motion pictures, 3D models, animation and sound that is produced for a specific function-purpose and target audience/user. A visual communication designer is a communication specialist who understands the user, thinks strategically and offers strategic solutions to create competitive and sustainable products in the global market.

Yeditepe University Visual Communication Design Department aims to educate students who are equipped to meet the needs of the design industry; It offers up-to-date, comprehensive and qualified education. The education program of the department; While offering courses such as basic drawing, 2D and 3D animation, game design, interaction design, video production, it offers students the opportunity to choose a specialization with workshops and elective courses. Having the opportunity to practice in the constantly renewed computer laboratories by learning current design programs, students develop original design projects by applying their theoretical knowledge. The course contents, which are regularly updated depending on the dynamics of the sector, are given by teaching staff of experts in their field.

Yeditepe University, Visual Communication Design Department graduates its students as specialized individuals with scholarships, internships, education abroad with the Erasmus Program, double major and minor programs and graduate education opportunities in different departments and faculties.

Graduates of Visual Communication Design Department have the opportunity to work in many professions with their ability to use technology effectively and strong communication skills. Students, who  are graduated from the Visual Communication Design Department after a four-year education, successfully represent themselves in the professional business world with their design portfolios they have created in workshops and end-of-year exhibitions throughout their education period. They work in the corporate communication departments of public and private institutions operating in various sectors, especially in the fields of visual communication of the media sector. Graduates can work in computer software companies, advertising agencies, television channels, game design companies, film production and animation companies with titles such as visual communication designer, 3D designer, concept designer, game designer, art director, web designer, interaction designer. Students who are successful in the required exams and complete a master program after graduation have the opportunity to pursue an academic career.

MISSION

The main purpose of the Visual Communication Design Program is to provide students with the ability to create original and contemporary design products. Within the scope of the program, in line with the requirements of the 21st century, students offer permanent solutions to social, environmental, urban, etc. problems by using cutting edge technologies. It is aimed to train students who adopt an interdisciplinary approach and have sectoral experience.

VISION

Visual Communication Design Department trains its students as communication designers who consider design as a communication process, research and develop powerful and new communication strategies, and transform knowledge into creative design products.

Program Goals

  1. Using their imaginations, students transform their conceptual and applied knowledge into meaningful, up-to-date and original design products.
  2. Students produce design-oriented solutions by centered on their aesthetic perception.
  3. Students gain technological competence in line with the requirements of the 21st century, and produce up-to-date, creative and questioning content by using different branches of the field.
  4. Students should have professional and sectoral experience in the field of Visual Communication Design.
  5. Students develop critical, analytical and solution-oriented approaches for visual communication design practices.
  6. It is aimed to raise students as individuals with professional ethics, respect for human rights and social responsibility awareness.

Yeditepe University determined the qualifications of all its education programs in 2012 within the scope of the Turkish Higher Education Qualifications Framework (TYYÇ), taking into account professional and current standards. Within the scope of the Bologna harmonization process, education and training became more planned and qualified.

Visual Communication Design Department students can benefit from the Double Major and Minor Programs during their undergraduate education with the additional credits they shhould receive in accordance with the agreements made with the relevant departments, provided that they meet the necessary criteria. The long-term (42 working days) compulsory internship practice within the scope of the COMM 300 Internship course in the fifth semester enables students to carry out the knowledge and skills they have acquired for about four months with the representatives of the sector, thus experiencing the working life before graduation and being included in a strong communication network.

In the fifth semester, the curriculum of the students is organized in such a way that they can work three days a week (Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday) in the institutions where they do their internship, and attend classes on campus two days a week (Thursday-Friday). While our students can do their compulsory internship in a company they find themselves, they can also get help from our department and the University Career Office in finding the company that is suitable for a field they want to focus on.

Graduation project students are expected to develop a project based on a concept which in its context is consistent with the multidisciplinary structure of our department. These projects may include future-oriented designs, artistic installations, multimedia applications, and different designs that contribute to the art and business world. Students must present a fully complete project in terms of the concept and designs about its selected theme with well-organized materials.

Purpose:

  1. It aims for the student’s preparedness for managing encounters and challenges in the field of communication design.
  2. It enables the student to obtain skills to communicate effectively to another party in a multimedia environment from the beginning of a concept through its process of development in a creative and appealing manner until it is complete.
  3. It requires the student’s ability to achieve artistic sense of selection of style and formatting the media environment.
  4. It ensures the student’s capability to obtain the technical skills to transform designs into creative products.
  5. It empowers the student’s capacity to recognize culturally, aesthetically, ethically and life sensitive methods of analysis and to acquire development-oriented mindset.
  6. It encourages the student’s capability to take a designer’s initiative.
  7. It empowers the student’s ability to design and construct a high level campaign that highly meets the expectations of a business sector by correct interpretations of those expectations with efficient time management.
  8. It empowers the student’s capacity to learn the technology and shaping social media.
  9. It ensures the student’s capability and being fit to work in 2D, 3D, print Web, time-based, interactive multimedia environments .
  10. It empowers the student’s ability to acquire innovative thinking, development- oriented and future-oriented mindset.
